After thousands of sample receipts, our intake bench can tell at a glance which results will need an asterisk. Here are the five collection errors behind most of them — all easily fixed.
1. The warm cool box
A sample that travels at 14°C instead of 4°C grows a different microbial story on the way to the lab. Freeze your gel packs solid, pre-chill the box, and slip a temperature logger in. It costs little and proves everything.
2. Pooling unlike things together
Mixing the start, middle and end of a production run into one bag hides the very variation you're testing for. Keep strata separate, label each, and let the lab composite deliberately if compositing is valid.
3. Monday-morning collection
Samples drawn Friday afternoon and posted Monday have lived a whole weekend before analysis. Schedule collection early in the week so transit days are working days.
4. Bare hands and busy air
Micro samples demand sterile tools, gloves and sealed bags opened once. We can tell when a sample met the factory floor more intimately than the product did.
5. Mystery labelling
"Batch 2??" in fading marker helps nobody. Product, batch, date, time, point of collection and collector — six fields, every time, in waterproof pen.
